Understanding the Monty Hall problem

The Monty Hall Problem is one of the most interesting logic puzzles around. It is named after Monty Hall, who hosted the American Gameshow Let’s Make a Deal, where there was a particular challenge that if players picked the right door from 3, they could win a car. (The other doors contain goats)

Marilyn vos Savant, according to her IQ the smartest person in the world, quickly became famous for her intelligence and was given a weekly magazine column in Parade, called Ask Marilyn. In one issue, she was asked about the problem. She said that: If a contestant picked one door, and then the host took one door away, the contestant should change the door they have chosen.

This was controversial, as surely each three doors had equal probability of hiding the car?

She was ridiculed by academics, mostly men, for her assertion, but the experimental probability and mind-bending logic ended up proving her right.

It is very tricky to understand, but hopefully the diagram at the top helps explain it. Anyway, this is a very interesting probability problem worth investigating further! You can find out more here.
