Members and guests write to Maths Society with their thoughts on mathematics.
If you are interested in writing an opinion piece, we recommend you read this page in full.
The process of writing an opinion piece can take any amount of time you want to take on it.
Summary
Opinion pieces are the way we offer members and expert guest writers the opportunity to publish their thoughts and views on mathematics. They can focus on any topic and be written in any style.
These can be in any format, from proper essays on mathematics
Authors may write-in with one-off takes or contribute their thoughts on mathematics regularly.
Topic
You can write anything about mathematics that interests you, however we may also commission specific opinion pieces by specific guest writers and members on specific areas of the world of maths.
Structure
We recommend opinion pieces be around 300-700 words long, however they can be submitted with any length or structure.
Writing
Good opinion pieces:
- Are well-articulated, thoughtful and engaging to read
- Give the reader new ideas or perspectives on mathematics
- Are persuasive and well-written
- Contain justified and inoffensive opinions
- Use evidence to support arguments
References and Accuracy
- All statements, assertions and formulae should be thoroughly checked to be accurate
- British terms used by the United Kingdom’s National Curriculum should be used by default but where alternative terms are used internationally they should be made clear
- You should provide evidence, either inside or outside your submission, for your claims
