Desmos Art Competition winner announced!

We began our Desmos Art Competition way back in September, but there was so much interest we decided to extend the deadline until 30 November! Desmos is a growing online graphing calculator, and learning tool, although others are available, but it is also famous for the beautiful art people have made with it. So much so that in 2020 Desmos launched an annual Global Math Art Contest!

Wanting to show our members the beauty of maths and what a wonderful art maths is, we started our own Desmos Art Competition. The most impressive piece of work, as chosen by our Committee, would win a gorgeous gold Maths Society badge, and take home a certificate to remember the competition by. It was also our first open competition, as anyone could enter via our contact details.

V Piridi was declared the winner with the wonderfully abstract entry above, complete with animation! If you want to see the equations he used to graph it, and watch the animation, you can find it here.

”I am really excited to have won the Desmos Art Competition! So many members got involved. It was also really fun making the abstract artwork with maths, and animating it was particularly cool! I will certainly keep using Desmos in the future, for fun and to learn. It’s also nice to have a gorgeous gold badge too!

— V Piridi, the winner

”It was wonderful to look through the artwork with the whole committee, and it was very difficult to find a winner! From abstract works to scenes, there were so many different opportunities!”

— A Gupta, Competitions Secretary

Excitingly, we announce this at the same time that Desmos has revealed the winners of their 2023 Global Math Art Contest. Over 100 creations, making use of Desmos’ new 3D feature, sound and animations, made by people in 20 countries, were selected for Desmos’ annual gallery. We recommend you have a look at them! They were all amazing, but here are a few of our favourites from the different age categories:

As we touched on earlier, you can also now explore maths in an entirely new dimension with Desmos. In addition to animating your graphs and giving them sound, you can now make 3D graphs, like the one above demonstrating conic sections! Visit the beta Desmos 3D right now and jump into a new dimension of maths!

It all goes to show that if you love art, or maths, you can put down your pallet knives, brushes, or protractors and pencils, and pick up your xs, your ys, your trigonometric functions and more, and make something beautiful with maths.
