Our story

Maths Society was founded by Charlton C in March 2023. Starting secondary school as an 11 year old, he was disappointed that despite his school offering a range of clubs and societies, there was no maths society for younger students.

Having fallen in love with mathematics during the coronavirus pandemic, Charlton decided to set up a Maths Society in his first year for students of all ages to share their love of maths.

Maths Society’s first meeting was held during a school lunchtime. It was attended by 49 students, a lot for a small classroom and pretty much unheard of for an academic society! The school’s Maths department even arranged an introductory video from maths comic Matt Parker. With that, our diverse community of maths-loving students of all ages and backgrounds was born. Charlton was elected our first president, with 16-year-old Aditya S elected as Secretary and 17-year-old Daniel C as our Treasurer.

With our mission established, Maths Society looked for new ways to spread the joy and knowledge of maths far and wide. We started our math-soc website in September of the same year and began writing student maths articles and resources. Since then, our website has had thousands of visitors from across the world and continues to grow and develop.

In Spring 2024, we held a ‘Malteser-Teaser’ competition that was visited by the then British Justice Secretary Alex Chalk MP, who later wore our badge in Cabinet and the House of Commons.

We recorded and published the pilot episode of Mathsounds, the student maths podcast, in the summer of that year.

November 2024 brought Maths Society’s biggest change yet, as we began to publish our monthly maths newsletter, allowing maths students from across the world to become members of our fast-growing community and read our best student-written maths articles and features.

In August 2025, we launched our maths shop, filled with maths merchandise from mugs to pencil cases and membership badges and more.

Maths Society has become the number one international student society for everyone interested in exploring the wonderful world of maths. We cannot wait to see what comes next and hope you will be along for the journey!
