Welcome Maths Society members to your latest insight into the wonderful world of maths. In this issue, we look at this year’s Fields Medallists, four extraordinary mathematicians studying everything from wave mechanics to logic. Particularly notable among them is Professor Hong Wong, only the third woman to receive the most prestigious prize in maths, having solved a century-old conjecture based around rotating a needle. We also report from Shanghai, where seven students – and for the first time, an AI model – attained perfect scores at the International Mathematical Olympiad, the premier world championship maths competition for high school students.
